By Stephanie Foster

Deciding whether to continue with her career or be a stay at home mom can be a painful decision for new mothers, and even for experienced ones. There are two dreams, each pulling you a different way.

One is the dream of always being their for your child. Of handling all the needs of your family at home. Being there for every first. Helping your child learn. Making almost every meal at home and being praised as the perfect mom by your admiring family.

The other is the dream of your career. The work you may love, or the dream that you will someday work your way up to that dream job. Bringing home enough money that your family can have all its needs comfortably met, and enough wants fulfilled to really enjoy life.

How to choose between them? It’’s not always a pleasant decision.

Consider Finances First

While not what you may want to be thinking about, your financial situation is vital to whether or not you can be a stay at home mom. Will your family have enough money to get by, or will such a decision leave it struggling?

There’’s a lot to consider. What would your family’’s financial position be without your income, without cutting costs? What sacrifices are you willing to make? Do you know for certain that you could find a way to work at home to bring in extra money if you needed to?

Don”t forget to consider costs that will automatically be cut if you stay at home. You probably won”t eat out as much. You”ll probably simplify your wardrobe. Your tax situation will change. You won”t be commuting, so your car will be driven less.

If your family can”t make enough cuts to make it on one income, you may be stuck for the time being continuing with your job. If considering other factors makes you desperate to stay at home you can continue to work outside the home while working hard to find a way to bring in an income from home.

Which Do You Really Want?

What you really want from your life is important. Will you really be happy without your career? Changing your identity to “your child’’s mommy” is a big change, and not always an easy one. Does that idea bother you?

Of course, even working outside the home a part of your identity quickly changes to “your child’’s mommy,” if not right away, then when your child gets older and starts making friends. But it can be harder when you”re a stay at home mom and don”t have an outside the home career to talk about.

On the other hand, you may want to be there all the time for your child, and not have to worry about how you”re going to manage to take time off work when your child needs you. This may be the thing you”ve dreamed about even more than a successful career. Being a stay at home mom may exactly suit what you want from life.

The Needs of Your Child

I”ve put this last, but certainly not least. Sometimes the needs of your child outweighs all other considerations.

For most children, so long as they”re in a good situation they can grow up to be happy, healthy, productive adults whether their mothers stayed at home or put them in daycare. Show your children that you care for them and love them, and your decision can be right either way.

But sometimes things aren”t that simple. There can be health issues creating problems. You can have trouble finding adequate daycare. Things can simply work out sometimes to where you have to find a way, any way, to have one parent stay at home, and most often the mother takes that job on.

About The Author

Stephanie Foster runs http://www.homewiththekids.com/ as a resource for at home moms.

By Eddie Lamb

Obviously the issue of parenting babies is one of great concern and importance, and so therefore it seems only logical that learning about and acknowledging all of the available information on the subject of parenting babies would be essential, especially if you are planning a child yourself. There are several pieces of information in particular that are extremely important to know in regards to parenting babies, and even if you aren”t planning on having children anytime soon, or at all for that matter, it is still useful and helpful information to know.

Things to Know on Parenting Babies

For example, one of the most important things to know in regards to parenting babies is how to baby proof your home. After all, if you are about to undergo the process of baby proofing your home, there are certain tips and techniques that you will want to know in order to keep your home safe and secure, and to keep your baby and children from getting hurt.

Stoves, ovens, and other appliances of the like are one of the most asked about factors in a home in regards to baby proofing, and this is incredibly important because with stoves, for instance, toddler hands are just at the right height to reach burners, pot handles, and the like. As well, ovens can be opened, dishwashers can be opened and these often contain such breakables as dishware as well as sharp objects such as knives and other, all of which are quite obviously extremely dangerous for toddlers.

The best remedy for this such matter is to install locking latches on all of these appliances that are in your home, and also install knob covers on everything you can in order to prevent a child from turning on burners on the stove, for instance.

Cabinets and drawers can also be incredibly hazardous to babies and toddlers, and so you should install latches to the insides of all drawers wherever possible, in order to keep your baby from being about to get into them, as well as reach the possibly dangerous products that are inside of them. A good idea is to keep one cabinet in particular where you have only plastic containers and lids, for instance, so that your child can go into this cabinet only and still have fun and feel as though they”re getting into trouble, but make sure to only have protected and safe materials in this cabinet that your child can play with and not get hurt by.

Plants are a factor in homes that are often overlooked. Many plants are poisonous or dangerous in other ways, and potting materials also pose a serious choking hazard. Therefore, you should always be aware of the plants that you keep in your home, and make sure that they are all always labeled.

By Stephanie Foster

Starting your baby on homemade baby food feels like quite a big step. You”re going from feeding your baby either breastmilk or formula only, to preparing foods from scratch and having to worry about quality control.

It’’s honestly not that hard. You can make wonderful baby food at home right from the start with just a few supplies and some work.

You can start with cereal, vegetable or fruits for your baby. It doesn”t really matter which, just keep it thin enough for baby to deal with.

Don”t start any younger than 6 months old if you can help it. One of my kids really made it hard to wait that long, so I understand the challenge, but do your best.

If you choose to start with cereals you”ll probably just buy a box of organic baby cereal. Rice cereal is a popular starter. But you can also grind rice into a powder using a coffee mill to make your own rice cereal. You will need to add boiling water and cook for 10 minutes to make this work, while boxed varieties may simply need water, breastmilk or formula added. Make sure the temperature is safe at feeding time.

Preparing Fruits

Some fruits can be served to baby simply after pureeing or mashing, such as bananas. Others do well after cooking, which also changes the flavor a little.

Buy organic when you can, so that you don”t have to think about pesticides. Peel the fruits. Babies often can”t really digest the peels yet.

Pears and peaches I always like to bake first. Peel and cut them up, then bake in a 350 degree F oven until soft. Puree in the blender, adding water if needed to reach the right consistency.

When cool, pour into the baby food trays and freeze. You can keep some in the refrigerator to cool off for a feeding the same day.

You can make applesauce as well, but given how readily available it is, I often just bought the unsweetened jars. I do not recommend bothering with the baby food jars of applesauce or individual serving containers. Get a big jar and freeze the excess. Much less waste.

Bananas just need to be mashed, and I suggest serving those fresh. However, bananas give some babies trouble with constipation. Be aware and don”t overdo them.

Preparing Vegetables

I suggest either steaming or roasting most vegetables. Steaming uses less water than boiling vegetables, so you lose fewer nutrients to the water. Puree in the blender, adding water as necessary to reach the consistency your baby currently prefers.

Squash, green beans, peas, carrots, potatoes and sweet potatoes are all good choices for the early days.

Preparing Meats

Most pediatricians say to not introduce meats until about 7-8 months of age. Ask your child’’s pediatrician for current guidelines.

Beef, chicken and turkey are good choices for starting your baby on meats. Cook in small chunks until completely done. Babies are really not up for meats that aren”t well done, for safety reasons.

Puree the meat with its cooking juices in your blender. Remember that just because you try to go low fat doesn”t mean your baby should. They need the fat. Add water if you need still more liquid.

Meats go well combined with vegetables as well. I keep them separate when preparing, then combine them when I reheat for each meal.

About The Author

Stephanie Foster blogs at http://www.greensahm.com/ about raising an eco friendly family.

By Maureen Amberg

Abandonment issues are some of the more difficult things for a child to overcome, and many children end up carrying these issues throughout their entire life. If you are able to identify the fact that your child does have these issues and to work with them properly, however, you may be able to help them to regain their self-confidence and to lead a life that is free of the pain of abandonment.

Identifying these issues in a child may be difficult. Abandonment is a type of grief, and children may express their difficulties with grief in a number of different ways. At times, depression may be the signal that they are giving to you and at other times, it could be a lashing out or an overall feeling of rage. Any time that a child begins acting out during the time when abandonment could be an issue deserves further investigation. If you”re able to identify it properly, however, you can begin working with the child as soon as possible, which will give you a better opportunity of success.

Being open with a child is one way for you to be able to address the situation, but you also need to make sure that your openness is age appropriate. This is especially the case whenever the abandonment came about as a result of divorce or perhaps even to death of one of the parents. It may be difficult for you to address these issues, as you may have difficulty with them yourself.

By working with the child, giving them the support that they need and helping them to be active in school or extracurricular activities, you help them to gain focus. They can then use this focus in order to find the confidence in themselves that is necessary to lead a happy and productive life.

About The Author

Maureen Amberg is an author, entrepreneur and children’’s advocate for MEA Online Edge Inc., with emphasis on the self esteem and self confidence of children.

By Jack Landry

With a newborn baby comes an outpouring of love from friends and family and you, as a parent, feel emotions that you will have never felt before.

The unconditional love and the desire to do everything you can for that baby are very common feelings.

Adjusting to having a newborn in the home can be a lot harder than many couples think it will be.

Although you love the newborn and you want only the best for him or her caring for a newborn can be hard.

The changes in your life will be major and shocking.

Even the most well prepared couple does not realize what is in store when they take home their first newborn from the hospital.

The time, energy and work that go into taking care of a newborn are monumental.

The majorities of newborns do not sleep through the entire night and will wake up around every two hours for feedings.

You will also have to get up in the middle of the night to change your baby’’s diaper.

The lack of sleep throughout the night is just one of the hills that a couple will have to conquer together.

It is very important that the mother and the father are equally involved in caring for and raising their child.

Of course, there are certain tasks that only the mother will be able to participate in like breast feeding.

Too many times when a couple brings home a newborn the mother feels extremely overwhelmed with the responsibilities that she is left to fill on her own.

Sharing the duties of having a newborn baby will make coping with the adjustment much easier.

The majority of men are less experienced when it comes to caring for, and interacting with infants.

Women are called to babysit when they are young and have a natural instinct that drives them to embrace and cuddle babies.

Women in general therefore, have been taught how to hold, change, feed and bathe infants.

A father may choose to not shoulder as much responsibility simply because he feels uncomfortable.

It is important that the parents of a newborn work together and help the father overcome the fears that he may have when caring for his own newborn.

By working together with the mother of the child the father may be able to become comfortable enough with his child to feel ready to take on responsibilities.

For a mother, bonding with a child begins as she can feel the child grow within her body. The bonding experiences that the father takes part in start when the baby is born.

For the majority of couples it is beneficial for the father to be in the hospital room when his wife gives birth.

Being able to experience his child’’s first moments of life may bring the father closer to his child.

Although fathers may be feeling nervous about caring for a child, the majority of the time the most dramatic changes after a baby’’s birth happen in the life of the mother.

Not only has her body changed but her everyday routine is drastically different.

When a mother stays at home all day with her child there are many rewarding moments but there are also hard moments.

It may be frustrating for some women to not be abel to have an adult conversation all day long.

It is important for a new mother to remember to talk to and express her feelings with mothers that are more experienced.

Being able to talk to someone that understands and can offer advice will become invaluable throughout your motherhood experiences.

New mothers and fathers will also want to sit down together to review their priorities and rearrange them to fit their new lifestyle.

Evaluate your expectations of one another and discuss what is plausible.

Having a new child in the home is a blessing and when met with an open mind and dedication can be a very meaningful and beautiful experience. It is important to do some research about how to best take care of your child.

Even the way you dress your child may be more complicated than you previously believed it to be.

Although it may be very important for you to find baby clothes that are unique and adorable the clothes also need to be safe.

It is possible to find baby clothes that are very unique and personal but are also safe.

Whether you want your child to have punk clothes or princess clothes your will be able to find the perfect combination of style and safety.

About The Author

Jack R.

By Jimmy Cox

It wasn”t too long ago that even the youngest child of the house had his well defined duties like making the bed, cleaning the shoes, putting out the rubbish to name but a few. But today the chores for kids scenario has changed dramatically.

The thing that stands out the most is that when laying out the chores for kids, they”re initial response is to ask what they”ll be getting in return, what is their reward. Most children today consider jobs around the house to be “family duties” and have the misconception that these “family duties” are to be done by the adults in the family.

And if for some reason they are asked to contribute, then there should be something in it for them in return, and that is generally of a monitory nature. The concept that chores like setting the table, stacking the dishwasher or putting out the rubbish should be done by all and every member of the family is completely beyond them. The idea that it takes a contribution from all family members to make a house run smoothly is lost.

And this has been a rod that we have created for our own back by the simple task of offering pocket money for helping out around the house. To alleviate this idea, you can start allocating simple chores for kids at an early age. By helping them through small tasks and showing them how you would like the job done, you are setting the stage for what is to come as they grow. One of the best ways to teach young children is to lead by example.

The old adage, “Do as I say, not as I do” is just not good enough any more. By showing them that you are keeping things in their proper places and doing all the simple house hold tasks, then they too will start copying your actions. Though they may not be able to do the task properly while they are young, you will be establishing a pattern of behaviour which will stay with them as they grow.

You can start with easier things for your toddler, like putting their toys away after playing with them, or helping you put groceries away or putting their dirty clothes in the laundry. As the child gets older, their responsibilities expand to fit their age and abilities.

Maintaining a proper list of chores for your children is a great way to keep consistency in the jobs. If each child has a chore chart assigning equally difficult or easier tasks to each of them, they can all see that they have a job to do. To avoid the kids kicking up a fuss about doing their allocated chores you need to explain them the consequences of not doing the job, but most important is to make sure you stick to your words and carry through with the consequence. This commitment to your words will help to avoid the making of excuses when they don”t want to do a task because they know exactly what the consequences will be and that you will carry them through.

Try to add fun elements in their work as well like making their work in the form of races and give rewards accordingly to whomsoever comes first. Rewards and fun elements should be added only occasionally though, otherwise your back to the exact situation you are trying to avoid where your child will only carry out their jobs if you agree to a reward.

The most common chore given to a children today is cleaning up their room. It is also the hardest job to get done consistently because as a general rule, it needs to be done every day. To motivate them, you can occasionally hide a surprise or some small gift in their room and tell them that if they tidy their room properly, they will find their reward. Make sure the surprise is hidden at the bottom of the messiest part of the room though, and again, don”t do this all the time. Keep it as a treat.

It also good to rotate the chores for kids each week as this gives them the opportunity to have a break from the chores they really dislike. This will help to keep them motivated and help to prevent boredom from setting in. In the whole process of setting chores for kids, make sure you don”t turn them into domestic slaves. Motivate them regularly and show appreciation for a job well done.

About The Author

Innovative Chore Charts To Motivate Your Child.

By Maureen Amberg

There are numerous opportunities for parents to implant characteristics to make their children into successful and productive human beings. Find the time and make it happen. What a wonderful gift to give a kid!

The Top 7 Ways to Parenthood Perfection:

     1. Character
2. Time
3. Discipline
4. Respect
5. Honesty
6. Read
7. Example

Should you be successful at teaching your children these seven traits, you will be well on your way to having flawless children.

CHARACTER:
Instructing your children in morality and kindness is not really difficult if done in a consistent and conscious manner. Good parents make developing character their top priority. Kind and considerate behavior towards others, practicing structured work habits and knowing right from wrong, will put your kids on the right path to good character.
Be a happy and optimistic person. Immense traits to impart to your children.

TIME:
What this means is taking the time to talk and truly listen to your kids. Give each child some individual one on one time. Watch and observe them. You will learn so much about your child by just sitting back and watching them. You”ll see what interests them, what they like to do. What kind of people they are developing into.
Wait and see what they can do for themselves. Probably a lot more than you could ever have imagined.
Slow down and take the time to be a parent.

DISCIPLINE:
Firm, fair and consistent! Let them know what to expect ahead of time. Every smooth working operation, a home environment included, needs some guidelines…rules and regulations. Expectations.

Obviously, restrictions need to be age appropriate. Do try to avoid the word “No”. They will pick it up on their own, but they do not need to learn it from you
Try not to punish from anger, but from a loving heart, knowing it is the right thing to do. You are doing your duty as a parent reaching for perfection.

RESPECT:
Be a genuine person. Set a good example for them to emulate. Children really are like sponges and will pick up characteristics from you, good and/or bad. It is your obligation to teach them to respect their elders, parents, teachers, the elderly. Also, other religions and different cultures. Most of all, they need to learn to respect themselves!

HONESTY:
How does one teach honesty when it is such am ambiguous subject? Being truthful and straightforward
are discussions you will have with your children, doing the best you can to discourage lying, cheating and stealing. Sometimes “intention” is subjective…perspective or opinion. Ultimately, this subject will be open to much discussion among your family.

READ:
Read to your children. Have them read to you. Read yourself, thus, encouraging them to do what you do. The written word is invaluable and you will want to nurture it in your children.

EXAMPLE:
Be a GOOD one. This is probably the one most important hope you have at attaining parenthood perfection.

The above principles can foster insanely intelligent, kind, honest, thoughtful, calm and confident children. What more could any parent possibly strive for?

About The Author

Maureen Amberg is an author, entrepreneur and children’’s advocate for MEA Online Edge Inc., with emphasis on the self esteem and self confidence of children.

By Brian Greenberg

When you are a new mom or dad, shopping for baby sleepers is an important task. There are several variables to consider when buying pajamas for your child. Price, quality and safety must all be considered before you make your final purchase.

A new son or daughter brings lots of joy into your life, but it also changes your family’’s budget. In addition to needing love and attention, your new bundle of joy also needs formula, diapers, blankets, furniture, toys, books and clothing. In fact, buying baby pajamas is one of the biggest expenses your family will face because of your new child’’s ever changing size.

Especially in today’’s difficult economy, many new parents are often enticed by deep discounts and big sales on children’’s clothing. The problem is that most of the cheaper brands of children’’s clothes are not durable enough to stand up to the test of time. The money you save on the initial purchase often isn”t enough to make up for the money you lose when you have to repurchase clothing because of durability issues.

Children are very tough on baby sleepers. They stain, stretch, rip and pull at clothing much more often than most adults. Cheap clothes are not resilient enough to withstand the demands of kids. Zippers break, seams bust and fabric fades and pills after just a few washes. Inexpensive kids” clothes may seem like a great buy until they hit the washing machine and come out looking like they”ve been through a war after the first wash.

Durability is important, but that’’s not to say you have to spend a fortune on baby pajamas. It is often tempting to dress up your children in expensive outfits for special occasions. It is important to remember that they are going to experience growth spurts that will make them jump through a couple sizes in just a matter of weeks.

A few pricey outfits are nice to have on hand for holidays and public outings, but dressing your children in high-end designer labels for everyday wear is simply a waste of money. Be sure to buy a couple dressy outfits and baby pajamas for special occasions. Also remember to shop for less expensive clothing for meals and play time. Nothing destroys a nice new outfit quite like spaghetti and finger paint.

Another important consideration when buying baby pajamas and clothing is safety. Some sleepers are not tested for safety, so you must evaluate them yourself. Sleepers and pajamas that are too large may pose a suffocation hazard if they do not fit properly. For this reason, you should not buy a size larger to make pajamas last longer.

Baby pajamas should fit properly and feature easy diaper access to make late night changing as quick and easy as possible. Also, make sure there are no loose cords or buttons that could pose any strangulation or choking risk. Newborns often claw at their face with their fingernails, so hand covers are often a nice feature. Also be sure to choose natural fabrics instead of synthetic to maximize the comfort of your child.

Footed pajamas are a favorite for children to wear on cold winter nights, and the rubberized feet offer extra traction to help babies keep their balance while learning to walk. Fleece baby sleepers also make a great choice to keep out chilly drafts. In warmer months, lighter cotton fabrics make a better choice for baby pajamas to keep children from sweating too much overnight.

Shopping for baby pajamas is fun. Be sure to consider price, safety and durability when making your purchase. Baby sleepers are some of the cutest articles of clothing you will buy for your children. With a little attention to detail, your child will be comfortable and happy with the outfits you select.

About The Author

Brian Greenberg is an experienced expert in the needs of infants and toddlers.

By Jack Landry

When you bring a baby into this world, that child is completely dependent on you. It is important to remember the responsibility that you take on when you have a child.

There a lot of responsibilities that many parents do not even realize will come with a child. Knowing some of the hidden responsibilities will help you to better cope with them as they come along.

Obviously you will have to clothe your child. But have you ever thought about the safety issues that come along with buying your child’’s clothes?

Buying clothes that adequately covers and protects your child is usually not that hard to figure out. It is also not hard to figure out that your child will require different clothes in the winter than he or she will need in the summer.

These are all issues that the average adults can logically assume. Lets delve into some of the issues that may not be so obvious to the majority of parents.

It is easy to only concentrate on the way clothes look. When you are excited for a new baby you often times get excited about the adorable outfits you will be able to dress him or her in.

When you first bring your baby home from the hospital he or she will spend the majority of time sleeping. Buying simple clothes that keep your baby warm and comfortable are the best option.

This wardrobe will basically include diapers, sleepers or gowns, undershirts, bibs, a sweater, caps, socks or booties, blankets and crib sheets. For optimum comfort these are the best clothes to provide for your child.

It is very clear that the majority of infant clothing is made to appeal to adults. Realizing that comfort and appeal do not always go hand in will help you shop smarter.

A baby’’s skin is very tender, soft and sensitive. Finding clothes that are made of soft, lightweight cotton fabrics are usually the best materials for your baby’’s clothes.

You can figure out what kind of material the clothing is by taking the time to look at the clothing label. This simple step can help your baby be more comfortable and help you find clothes that are easy to take care of.

Cotton is usually a very safe bet for baby clothing. The cotton is absorbent but it also breathes; this allows body moisture to evaporate.

Jersey knit clothing is another excellent option. This clothing will keep its shape, shrink minimally and will never need to be ironed.

Cotton/polyester blends will be comfortable and they will also be resilient. These clothes will be very low maintenance.

If you do buy clothes that are made of synthetic fibers such as nylon, polyester or acrylic it is advisable to put a cotton undershirt on your baby.

Although they will not drastically hurt your baby, these materials are much less comfortable and may give your child a rash.

Finding garments that hang from the shoulders can be very beneficial. The support that the clothes get from the shoulders will allow the garment some give, while still keeping the child adequately covered.

Raglan or kimono sleeves will allow your child to move comfortably and will also help you easily put the sleeves on your child.

If your child’’s sleeves are too tight they can cause frustration for you as you try to fit them on and discomfort for your child.

Clothes with easy to fasten necks and other openings will allow you ease of access for changing your baby’’s diaper. You will have to change your baby’’s diaper in the middle of the night and you are going to want to be able to do this easily.

Clothes that have a minimal amount of seams are the most desirable. The seams will put more pressure on your baby’’s skin when he or she lays on them and may make laying down in certain positions very uncomfortable.

Non-binding waistlines are very important. You will have to take your child’’s pants on and off many times during the day to change his or her diaper and you do not want this to be a difficult process.

The sleepwear that you choose should be snug, but not too tight and not too loose. It is critical that your child is comfortable and able to stay warm but is not in clothes that suffocate.

Having a child opens the doors to a whole new world. The sudden responsibility for another human being’’s life can be overwhelming but if you are well prepared you can be a successful parent.

About The Author

Jack R.

By Cheow Yu Yuan

School can be an overwhelming experience for your child. Although she may be excited, she may also fear the unknown. There are many things you can do to make sure that she is ready for learning and coping with the new environment in school. One way to do so is through enrolling your child in a music class that emphasizes a holistic approach.

Music and movement classes is and excellent way to introduce your child to social interaction and emotional development. Activities of a music and movement class typically involve singing, dancing, moving, story-telling, use of simple musical instruments and play-acting. Such activities require the child to interact with her parent and other children. It is through such interactions that your young child picks up important social skills such as turn-taking, cooperation, leading or to be led etc. Parent-child bonding happens naturally, and the joy of these experiences also, according to psychologists, ”credit the emotional bank” of your child to give her the confidence and motivation needed when she enters primary school.

Research has also shown that music and movement enhance listening and linguistic skills in a child. This is important when she begins formal learning in school. Activities such as storytelling and singing help the child to tune her ability to listen more carefully and to build up words and vocabulary better than the average child.

Creative responses are encouraged when children are given avenues to explore. Musical activities that provide lots of exploration through either movement or playing instruments can help your child develop creativity.

Do you know that music can also help your child in Math? Research has proven that musical learning impacts spatial-temporal intelligence, an area of mathematical intelligence. Many aspects of music correlate to math. For instance, even simple songs have discernable rhythmic or melodic patterns. When children are led to discover these aural patterns, they are ahead of children who only work with visual patterns. Learning to read and write musical notations are also proven to help with spatial-temporal reasoning. Command of musical literacy involves understanding of time, duration, subdivisions and interpretations of symbols and many more challenges to the brain!

Give your child a head start in life. Enroll her in a music and movement class. Your child will certainly enjoy and look forward to a fun and enriching experience and develop skills that will not only prepare her for school but will last her a life time.

About The Author

For more information regarding music for children, visit Kindermusik Asia.
